In my time online (about 8 years), I have seen countless information on how to make money, how to market products, how to drive traffic and so on. However when I read what Marlon Sanders, who has also been online since web started (!), had developped, I was somewhat fascintated. I know he is well-experienced on marketing. This is what I read:

There are many reasons why your computer could be running slow…

I’m myself pretty much a hard core computer user, couple of friends have mentioned that if a new computer needs to be tested in just a couple of hours, it should be given to me. Simply because my normal computer workload is pretty much at maximum at all times. I have Mozilla FireFox open with 20-50 different tabs, couple of Adobe Acrobat windows, couple of word files, Editplus (text editor) with 30 tabs, plus of course Adobe Photoshop, mail programs, MSN and these are just the main things.

The way your ecover design looks is very important if you want to make visitors to the website want to click on the product. The problem with digital products is that, well, they are digital. They are do not exist physically. They do not possess any physical structure. For this reason, it is essential to make it look attractive and as realistic as possible.

The way the ecover is designed alone will be enough to shape the prospects’ minds into thinking that the content is just as professionally done as the cover. If the cover had ragged covers and the text cannot be read, then obviously the content cannot be any better. Well at least that is the message the cover carries.

If you are in the business of selling digital products, then ecovers should be one of your first considerations.

Here are some tips on how to make an ecover appealing and attractive.

1. Make the ecover stand sideways so as to create the illusion of three dimensional image. The ebook is an online product that cannot be held between our hands. Therefore the more we make the cover look like a real book cover, the better. A physical book is three dimensional and you want your prospects to feel the same way about your ebook as they would a physical book.
2. Imagine a light source and make shadows keeping in mind the light source. If you make shadows in the same direction as the light source, it will not be realistic, so make shadows in the opposite direction. You can position a real book with a light source and see how the shades would be like and try to create the same.
3. If you are planning on making reflection, do not make it a complete reflection; just make a hint of it.
4. Make the cover design to reflect on the content. For example, if your content is 10 pages, make the cover a thin book or a ring binder. If you make a big fat cover, it does not go well for the credibility of the author.
5. Do not overcrowd the cover with many colors and images. What need to stand out is the title and subtitles. The colors and images are there to attract the attention not to distract.
6. Use text fonts that are readable. Do not use flowery fonts that are difficult to read.
7. Start drawing the image with a large canvas with about 200 resolution. This will make the final image better quality. Then after finalizing the image, reduce the resolution.
8. Save the image in three sizes: large, medium and small.
9. Save in use JPeG images for photographs and GIF images for flat color pictures.
10. When place the images on web page do not resize them as this will distort the image and destroy the quality. Resize then with your graphics program and them place them in the web pages.
11. When you use the width and height attributes to resize your images, you slow down the time it takes the browser to render the page. So make sure that you want the same size as how you it to be displayed.
12. Limit the amount of text to what’s important. The less text you use, the larger and more readable your text will be.
13. Last but not least, save the image in the graphics editor extension so that you can make adjustment later.

In my earlier post, I had talked about the fantastic program that created stunning ecovers. This program is called EcoverMAX. It contains several action scripts for Photoshop 7 (it was created in this version) for various styles of covers such as hard/soft cover for ebooks, reports, ring binders, CD/DVD covers, membership pass, software boxes, with or without reflections and shadows and so on.

For people like me who like to play around with action scripts and tweak them to fit their needs and likings, EcoverMAX is excellent. You can make any changes to the script and save it for future use.

This is one of the reason why scripts are more popular than full blown softwares where you are limited to the certain features.
